It is surprisingly well done. Orcs, trolls and other bad guys don't
quite fit my imagination, but everything else works pretty well. Very
good fight scenes without horrible gore that will keep you kids awake
with nightmares for the next two weeks. It is very heavily a guy flick,
with female characters really not getting the attention deserved. Those
unfamiliar with the Hobbit are going to be lost the first time they see
it, and should go with a Registered Tolkien Guide.

And whoever summed it up as "it keeps building up to something and then
quits" had the movie down perfectly, which is exactly what the book
does in Volume 1.
