1) clearly establish territoriality in individuals
2) inventory species diversity

That second one would cause them to compare individual X with
the existing pool, looking for patterns that suggest more or
less diversity in local populations or even the (known) total
availible population.

On this survey, the investigators must've gotten similarity
alarms that, the more they looked, looked like the same
individual was *reallllyyyyyyy* getting around. Or their twin
was....
