Position Title: Regional Program Assistant      Salary Range:
$8.44-$11.20per hour

Exempt/Nonexempt: Not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor
Standards Act


Supervisor:  Regional RepresentativeSouthwest and Central Virginia


Office Location: Newport, VA

Positions Supervised: None


Departmental Mission: Permanent protection and sensitive stewardship of the
Appalachian Trail footpath and associated resources through effective
implementation of a cooperative management system involving ATC, Trail
maintaining clubs, and public-agency partners.

Position Purpose: Under the direction of the regional representative, the
regional program assistant, working with the regional staff, is responsible
for coordinating and recruiting for the five regional Trail-crew programs,
performing related office tasks and routine correspondence, and maintaining
the office accounting, volunteer recruitment data (VCR), and general public
contact for the southwest and central Virginia regional office.

DUTIES PERFORMED


. Coordinates, administers, and implements volunteer recruiting for
ATC-sponsored Trail crews, including assistance for developing advertising
and promotion plans, assistance for annual development and printing of
volunteer crew brochures, and processing crew applications and thank-you
packets. Maintains the VCR database, and periodically reviews and modifies
ATC's Recruitment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).


. Distributes applications for GMC Long Trail Patrol and MATC Trail Crew
programs, recruits volunteers for Konnarock, mid-Atlantic and Rocky Top
crews, including conducting telephone interviews and checking references
when necessary.


. Coordinates the distribution of donated clothing, equipment, and tools for
ATC's sponsored crew-programs with ATC's development director and staff and
other crew-program administrators.  Coordinates the design, production,
ordering, and distribution of  crew program T-shirts.


. Processes documents including routine correspondence and technical
reports; generates and updates databases, spreadsheets and charts; formats
and finishes draft documents prepared by ATC staff members for distribution
to trail management partners and the public; collects and posts daily mail;
assists with preparation of mailings generated by regional staff and board
members; maintains regional office files and office supplies; answers
telephones and directs incoming calls; processes information requests
promptly; returns phone messages in the event of a staff member's absence.
May handle logistics for the major regional meetings.


. Assists the associate regional representative in his/her program
responsibilities, particularly volunteer recruitment, record-keeping, and
maintaining financial records for Konnarock, Rocky Top, and regional office
accounts.  Performs office work associated with the daily administration of
the regional office, and serves as the primary resource for public contacts
with the office.


. Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS


A high-school diploma or equivalent is required, with demonstrated skills in
word processing, database management, and bookkeeping.  The incumbent should
be able to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing.  A
working familiarity with the Appalachian Trail and with ATC's Trail-crew
programs is highly desirable. Experience with Macintosh systems helpful.
