Re[4]: [at-l] A.N.W.R. Vote and political activism.....
"Yep - but not all that complicated either - you can't keep a website running
when the people you need to operate it are the ones you drive off. He needed
thruhikers -- and couldn't keep them. at-l HAS thruhikers - and keeps
collecting more. That's one reason why emulation by at-l would be a bad thing.
Keep that in mind when the irresistible urge to change the list hits you."
I guess it depends on why you are running a website. Obviously, a very friendly
site, attracts very friendly folks. Those folks surely get a great deal of
enjoyment out of the site. They stay around, chit chat, occasionally debate
important issues, and greatly enjoy the experience.
I can envision another goal for a site, in fact I once participated in such a
site. That site wasn't terribly friendly, but it provided a wealth of good
information to potential thru hikers, while at the same time working to improve
the trail environment, to expand the buffers needed to preserve a wild trail,
and working to prevent incursions into the wildness of the trail. After a while
the site owner just got weary (no pun intended) of juggling these multiple
demands of the trail and trail users and perhaps simplemindedly and wearily
closed down.
Weary (no I'm not Wingfoot, really)
