[at-l] winter exercise idea?

what is a person to do in the winter to get a nice cardiovascular exercise.
when there are no hills and no snow just cold weather and pavement as far as
the eye can see? it is 40 minutes to the nearest trail from my house 1.5
hours to a section with hills of any kind(they are rolling at best). I live
in suburbia hell.. I have been digging a hole and chopping wood now but that
is almost done.

what do other people do to stay in shape in the winter. I always get all out
of shape by February and then need to get back in shape and by the time I am
in shape it is winter again.....I was biking which I found to be a great way
to give my knees a rest from hiking but it is to cold for that as I would
need to buy much more wind proof stuff.

I go hiking once a week(normally less then 10 miles cause of trip time and
logistics). but that seems to not be enough. I want something I can do all
the time every day. any idea. as walking just is not hard enough and I need
something more extreme so I can get a nice work out in an hour not in 6
hours. and I am leery of running as I don't know how and I am afraid I will
hurt my knees. I loath indoor exercise as I find it boring and I just cant
do it all the time as I get bored with it and just stop. who wants to stay
at a wall for an hour.

Wisperlight who is getting flab-ee-er by the second.
