A couple of years ago I wrote a post about what was going on across the 
border on Veterans Day (I live very near the Canadian border and listen to 
CBC Radio quite a bit).  It seems the Canadians have always treated 
Veterans Day more solemnly than the US has (in my memory anyway).  This 
year, due to the events of 9/11, some of that attitude has rubbed off on 
this country.  It is no longer just an excuse for another "HUGE SALE!" at 
the local discount or furniture store.  I find myself having mixed feelings 
about that.  The recognition of the real significance of the holiday is 
gratifying but the National sense of insecurity which inspires the 
recognition is truly regrettable.  I look forward to the day when our 
citizens can feel sufficiently secure to again be blas'e about Veterans Day.
