[at-l] Blood Mountain?

A friend of mine from Blairsville hiked over to Blood Mountain
last week and wrote me that the whole place smelled like an open pit.
He sorta' questioned why anybody would want to expose themselves
to conditions like that on purpose.
Was he over-reacting or is it really that bad?
