[at-l] mount rogers trip suggestions

Wisperlight,

There are two car campsites near Mount Rogers. One is Grindstone campground
on VA603 just north of the mountain. You can take the Mt Rogers trail from
that campground that will intersect the AT south of the mountain at Deep Gap.
Then go north on the AT for about a mile to the Mt Rogers Spur trail and up
to the top. Another car campground is in Grayson Highlands State Park near
Wilburn Ridge (accessed from US58). You can take the Rhododendron gap trail
from Massie Gap in the park to the AT and then go south on the AT to the
Mt Rogers Spur trail. This is a much more scenic route and should give you
a good view of the wild ponies. You can get good maps at the Mt. Rogers NRA
headquarters on VA16 or at the Grayson Highlands State Park visitors center.
If you want to camp away from your car nearer the mountain, there are plenty
of good sites near the AT just north of the State Park in the MRNRA.
