My intent was that one would pick the boot/shoe of which to buy multiple 
pairs after they were sure it met their needs, after trial under all intended 
use conditions. Yea, sometimes that's a little hard to do until you've 
completed several LONG hikes.
Really that part of the comment was out of frustration of finding a, great 
for me, clothing item only to have it no longer manufactured when I go back 
for the replacement several years later [it happens way too often].

Regarding GoreTex, I didn't make a yea or nay comment but concur that its 
effectiveness is nil when dirty.
