Short answer is yes, that is correct. It is a beautiful hike to boot, 
especially in late May.  You can shorten it somewhat by taking the Colbert 
Ridge Trail down to the campground out of Deep Gap. It is about an 8+ miler 
that way. If you really want a workout, climb out of the campground to Deep 
Gap and then to Mitchell. :-) If you do the 12, it will bring you down in 
Burnsville.
