[at-l] Sleeping bag detective work

hmmm sounds like none of the attached labels have any type of degree rating
at all... do they have brand names w/ perhaps model info?? if so, you
could contact the manufacturer customer service ( check web pages for phone
numbers ) and ask them to tell you what the degree rating is for that bag.
Thickness touchy feely doesn't necessarily work unless they are all stuffed
w/ the exact same material. I slept next to a guy in the Smokies during an
April ice storm and his sleeping bag was the thinnest thing I have ever seen
in my life and he was comfy in there while I was wrapped in a puffy thick 10
degree down bag - also comfy.

If you lived anywhere other than FL, I'd also say go sleep outside in them
for the next few nights and see which one makes you sweat the most or keeps
you warmest! Maybe would work??

Cheerio

Subject: [at-l] Sleeping bag detective work

I am leaving tomorrow to do the AT section from Wayah Bald (where my last
year's hike at this time ignominiously ended due to threat of snow and wimpy
companions - haha) down past Standing Indian to where the trail crosses
Highway 76 - a spot about 20 miles west of Clayton, Georgia. I actually hit
the trail Sunday morning with three other friends and get off Thursday
afternoon.

I have my three sleeping bags lined up and I am having a hard time deciding
which would keep me warmest. Is it solely based on the thickness of the
"stuffing"? I suspect not, but I don't have a lot else to go on. The
thickest one is a DuPont with Hollofil 808 - nylon outside and cotton like
plaid inside. The other bag ( the biggest one) is a Slumberjack with nylon
outside and cloth inside. The third one is a Coleman - green cloth outside
and red felt like inside - seems to be the lightest weight bag and the only
one I am pretty sure I am not taking.

Anybody feel like a sleeping bad detective out there? I will provide any
further clues if you tell me where to look.

Also, if anyone else is going to be in that neighborhood during those days,
let me know.

Thanks.

RET in Sunny Fla
