In one of the early Castaneda books, I seem to remember that Don
Juan teaches Carlos how to run in the desert.  If you look ahead,
you stumble over everything at foot; if you watch your feet, you
run into cactus.
The trick seemed to be to focus your intent ahead.  One might
assume that then your peripherial vision and spacial processing
takes care of what's at foot.
A good thing to practice on day hikes.
