Lost - one pair of breasts
Found titanium mushees....

We were up for breakfast, another marvelously prepared
meal by Paul. He gave me the recipe for his home fries -
delicious! Even Spur, who rarely eats them, loved them!
There had been 8 of us at the table, but it was surprisingly
quiet as meals go. Most of us were still preoccupied with
recent events; much of our conversation centered around
them.
Spur had taken care of a bunch of errands before breakfast,
Post Office, emailing, phone calls, etc. We'd packed our
gear the night before, so all that was left was checking out
and saying our "goodbyes."
It was 9:15 when Paul dropped us at the trailhead. We'd
targeted a stopping point 19 miles up the trail for today.
We had to hike strong in order to make it by dark. We said
bye to our gracious host for the past 2 days and were off.
We had only 2 climbs today, both were small ones. The
rest of the way was mildly undulating trail.
We'd kept hoping o see moose, but had no such luck. We
did see the largest toad I'd ever seen and a patch of the
strangest mushrooms. They appeared to be metallic -
they looked like aluminum! We joked that they were
"titanium mushrooms."
We stopped for lunch at a clearing near the Bald Mtn
Lean-to. Angry Jack and Lollipop passed us and we
all talked about camping near the west Branch of the
Piscataquis River.
It started to feel really cold so we kept our lunch break
short. It was good to be climbing. Atop the Bald we had
incredible views! It was blusteringly cold at spots, so
we did not linger up there for long.
We had wonderful views of ridgelines and mountains in
the distance. Was that really Katahdin we saw far away
to the north? We couldn't be sure, but it was really exciting
to think that it might have been!
The temperature was dropping rapidly, but we were hiking
well. We paused again for a short break at the Moxie Bald
Lean-to, where we again met Angry Jack and Lollipop.
I wrote a lamenting message in the log book here. Essentially
it read: "Lost - one pair of breasts. 'Not sure where I lost them,
but I noticed them missing while catching a glimpse of myself
in a mirror in Caratunk."
That ought to make a lot of folks laugh when they read it. It's a
common phenomenon that female thruhikers experience; I think
we need to start a support group, but that thought alone inspires
a whole new line of jokes....

Spur wrote an entry too. "Woe is me."

We hiked on, across mostly level trail. Moxie Pond was an incredibly
beautiful and huge pond. Still, no moose to see, however. :-(
We crossed a number of streams and brooks - all so low that no
fording was necessary. We could simply hop from one rock to
another. Crossing over the West Branch we easily found a
campsite and made our home for the night.
We had a pleasant time over supper, but it was cold!!! When we
finally entered our tent to write our journals, I was unable to see the
screen of the pocketmail device - it fades when it gets cold. Even
after tucking it inside my shirt to warm it up, I could not read the print.
I simply punched out some notes in the dark and then curled up
in the sleeping bag. I was wearing every piece of clothes I had with
me! This journal entry would have to be written tomorrow, instead. Brrr.
