Dear friends, I am happy to report that I and my family are safe. My older son Dan (Lightning Bolt, AT 2000) was very close to ground zero and witnessed the entire castrophe, my other son is somewhat involved in the rescue effort. As for my wife a RN at a hospital just over the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan things have returned to almost normal. I was a Structual Ironworker and took part in the erection of the WTC I can tell you first hand that it boggles my mind that those buildings could be destroyed that quickly. If you can imagine one column that weighed 55 tons falling straight down from above think of 60 from every 3 floors from the excavation that is 100 feet deep to about the 28 floor where they lightened up to maybe 30 tons and so forth as the building rises not counting all the outside columns and intermediate beams throughout the structure you may get an idea as to the severity of the tragedy, it probably measured as a small earthquake.
I have lost a dear friend a Firefighter who gave his life trying to save others, I am also getting bad news from other friends that sons and daughters are among the missing. There is a call for Ironworkers that I will responsed to, I don't know how useful I can be but I'm willing to try. One the faqs I answered while I hiked the AT was, What is it like to live in NYC? If you are keeping up with this story you can see how NYers have responded to this tragedy I've always said that NY was like living in a group of small towns all pushed together. Some good some not so good. I am proud to be an American a New Yorker and an Ironworker. Please continue to pray for the victims and their families. If anyone wants updates on what it is like at ground zero and I succeed in being able to help please let me know. God Bless America.--- EZ
