Manitoba's monster bear could be one for the books

WINNIPEG -- It could have peered over the top of Shaquille O'Neal's head =
and weighed almost three times as much as the 300-pound-plus giant of =
the basketball court.=20

But a black bear that Manitoba conservation officers estimate could be =
the largest ever recorded in the world still lost a midnight fight with =
a 1986 Mazda last week and had to be destroyed.=20

"The actual measured weight is 856 pounds (more than 388 kilograms) plus =
a conservative estimate of 30 pounds of lost body fluids and =
dehydration," wildlife biologist Doug Schindler said yesterday.=20

Schindler works in eastern Manitoba, where the bear was killed Aug. 30 =
near a cottage country garbage dump alongside Lake Winnipeg.=20

The bear wasn't weighed until five days after its death, which is why =
they have to estimate its live weight at almost 402 kilograms, or 886 =
pounds, but Schindler said it was still an imposing sight.=20

"We had several experienced wildlife biologist types and officers, =
fellows who were well-versed in dealing with bears, everybody was =
basically in awe."=20
