The view from the hometeam is "don't leave home without it."  In 97 when Jon did the PCT some hiker sent a message to PCT-L about Wanchor's spectacular self arrest with his ice axe.  Of course, Jon/Wanchor never told me a thing about this episode until I questioned him based on the PCT-L report.  Turns out he (with two hiking sticks) did take a tumble and have to self arrest with the ice axe.  His was a used expensive, very lightweight model (which he can't remember the name of).  The ice axe kept him from going over a cliff.

The ice axe was one of the crazy things stolen when our house was broken into New Year's of 1997.  Not a lot of use for an ice axe in Florida.
