As best I remember, it started in discussions of gear and technique, as an
upfront acknowledgement that others had different experiences, results, etc
about the same thing -- often because of many variables.

Sort of a recognition that IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) really did not cover
the issue of results.  In time, the way we used it  came to include opinion,
however.
