First time on the AT: In 1989, during a weekend backpacking trip with
friends, Harriman
State park (NY), we went through the Lemon squeezer.
First time I realized I was on the AT: Saw white blaze during the trip
Portions of AT covered: Small bits & pieces in NY, GA
& VA.

Born in 1955, I grew up in a small NJ town (father worked, mother stayed
home).
Poor family in a town of affluent people (AT&T corporate Headquarters was
built there).
In Boy scouts from 1966 - 1974. This is where I got my
camping skills & my love for fire <VBG> & the
outdoors...
Into music in High School, played trumpet in the orchestra, Concert band,
Marching band,
Jazz band & in the pit orchestra for musicals (gave it up after High
school). Also sang during High
school years at my church (gave it up after high school, but took it up
again 20 years later).
Knee problems in high school, led to knee problems later.
My mother got sick & passed away in 1981,
after 9 years of suffering from Lou Gherigs disease (ALS). The suffering she
went through, and the family went through during those years reshaped my
life, and is something I still live with (and still have trouble dealing
with).
I served in the Air Force from 1981 – 1987. This is where I started
jogging & working with computers. I spent 2 years in training, first as a
Russian linguist (... it didn't work out), then as a Computer specialist
(worked at the national Security Agency). I had my first knee surgery in
1985 (after which I started my jogging), then I ran in 15-20 races a year
(for fun),
because I loved running & got to hang out with women
in skimpy outfits… :)

In 1989 I biked 350 miles around Virginia (up over skyline drive was fun).
In 1990 I ran & finished the Marine Corps marathon. In 1992 I Biked 570
miles across
Iowa (great people). I had another knee surgery late in 1992 (I tried my
hand at skiing, it didn’t work). In
September, 1994 I got married to my wife Shari. We ate
our way through the Hawiaan Islands for 3 weeks, and I
haven’t lost the weight yet… Since then, I have pretty
much vegged out. We lived in NJ from 1994 – 2000 & just moved to SC,
9 months ago. I’ve recently taken up
Biking, jogging & hiking again, bought a new motorcycle
(Honda Shadow Sabre 1100), bought new backpacking gear
& decided to just get out & hike! My first week long backpacking trip is in
2 days, with AT-Lers (my longest trip before was 3 days) …

I started thinking about the AT in 1988, when I joined
the ATC. Kathy Biltons AT page got me started. I spent 2 years in NJ doing
Trail maintenance on County park
trails (Adopt a trail Vollunteer). I later joined AT-
L, and started dreaming of Thru hiking shortly there
after. Who knows what the future holds, but it better include either a
thruhike or a section hike of the AT. I'm currently a life member of the
ATC.
