other options are : 

1) the north half of the AT from Clingmans dome to davenport gap. 
requires a shuttle but is a great hike.  

2)  there is a loops out of deep creek campground.  Up to the AT,
mount collins & clingman's dome,  and back down. 

3) there is also a loop from the treemont area that takes you up to
spence field and Derrick Knob.

3) Explore the cataloochee area.  there are a couple of ways to make a
loop hike from the campground. some of my favorite smokies campsites
are in this area.  Mt. sterling is a great high altitude tent site,
with beautiful views.  and, who knows, maybe you will be the 1st one
to write a trip report where you actually see an elk in the smokies!

trails and camp sites, if you need it.
