[at-l] ATC ad policy

Road crossings and shelters - - two places for ATC to let common sense
become "The Policy". May I suggest a practice commonly used by a multitude
of organizations that have a need to pass the word from person to person who
may not be meeting face to face. They do it on off shore oil rigs and they
do it in commercial airliners. It is a really simple concept.

On the AT, a rustic wooden mail box or bird house sort of feature could be
provided by the maintainers in which could be found an info book, not a
trail register which is a different animal. Anybody with a need to pass
information of a semi commercial nature such as that which Jensine wrote
about earlier or like that which Coosa used to leave - trail angels, hostel
owners, pizza delivery info, whatever - is neatly and concisely and
unobtrusively gathered into one easy to find and easy to monitor location.
No signs nailed to trees. No bill boards displaying scantily clad hiker
trash.
None of the things that ATC has a need to regulate. No visual pollution. And
we have the added benefit of providing a place wherein emergency info could
be provided. Nearest hospital. Nearest telephone other than the one in
your pack with a dead battery. At road crossings, which way to turn to go
to the nearest town. How far. When and where to find Easter eggs. All
sorts of useful stuff.

Just info - for the hiker - from the provider. If you don't want to be
bothered by all that civilization junk, just keep walking. Cool !!
