No, my point was that the idea of the travel, the hike, the writing,
the Sabbatical _itself_ was the bizarre notion to the reporter. Most
people consider the idea of walking the AT an interesting but eccentric
concept, at best. 

No, the marriage sabbatical is is not a new idea at all, nor a
particularly good or bad idea. I believe the Illiad is a fairly old
story about a fairly prolonged marital sabbatical, written about how it
affected both spouses. I find most pair bonds seem to do quite well
among two individuals who each lead interesting lives that diverge and
merge, much as an invention by Mozart. The discordance of the
separating voices of the melody only makes the rejoining of the phrases
that more exquisite.
