"Iodine in
sufficient strength for long enough is very safe and effective," says Orange Bug.

Perhaps. But as the orange doctor may have noticed, humans tend to be less than rational creatures,
especially when thirsty after a hard morning of hiking, or a night at a waterless camp.

At least, the few times I have used iodine on the trail, I have tended not to wait for the "long enough"
that makes such treatment "safe and effective."

Careless use of filters also results in contamination, of course. And trail users tend to be
careless in my observation. That may be why 30 percent of long distance hikers in the only formal
surveys I have seen get stomach upsets, regardless of whether they treat their water or not.

However, I still like DelDoc, probably, as I said before, because he tells me those things I already
believe. That also may be a human trait that orange bug may have noticed from time to time.
