Yeah, that's the ticket. Hazlitt and the rest of them
Austrian school economists were Birchers. Who would've
thought? :)

Whatever. It was merely an observation on the primary
motivation behind the federal government's involvement 
with such works as the Skyline Drive and the Appalachian
Trail, and why these types of projects were falling out
of favor well before America's entry into war. I don't
believe that the construction of a road, recreational or
otherwise, through the Mahoosics would've been seriously 
pursued after the end of the first New Deal. 

You and anyone else on this list are invited to post
arguments to the contrary. In fact, I'd rather that someone
does, as Cummings' post was the first I'd ever heard of
such a proposal.
