Appalachian Trail Trivia
Fun facts to consider when hiking the length of the 2,100-mile Appalachian
Trail, also lovingly referred to as AT by thru-hikers.
Total elevation gain for a thru-hiker is 471,151 feet for entire trip, an
average of 3,000 feet every day. It’s like climbing Mount Everest 16 times
in
a row from sea-level.
Average hiking rate is 16 miles per day.
The typical thru-hiker will have had about 1,000 miles of lifetime
backpacking experience.
The pack averages 45 pounds.
The fastest record trip, with no support system was 61 days in 1991, by Wade
Leonard. Average speed was 2.8 miles per hour.
Fastest time, with support, was 52 days by ultramarathoner David Horton in
1991, with an average speed of 4.3 miles per hour.
Average body weight for thru-hikers at the start was 166 pounds for men, 140
pounds for women.
Average weight loss for thru-hikers is 20 pounds.
There have been a total of nine homicides along the trail.
The average cost for doing the whole trail is $3,200, or about $1.50 per
mile.
Of the 1,200 hikers who start each year, an average of about 200 will
complete the entire trail—a dropout rate of 84%
