Traditional pasty recipes vary across the U.P.; contemporary versions
include
chicken and vegetarian pasties. In any case, most recipes contain some
combination of the following:
onion
ground beef and/or pork (or venison, but...)
carrots, sliced, diced, or shredded
rutabagas, diced
potatoes, cubed
salt and pepper to taste
You can "jump start" your pasties by sauteeing the ingredients first in
a pan on
the stove top. Fold and seal into a pastry shell and bake.
Serve with ketchup (western U.P.) or brown gravy (eastern U.P.)
Caution: tons o' calories...
