As of 18 August -- in 2000 a total of 226 SoBos and 46 Flip-floppers had
signed the Baxter Park Registers and in 1999 the numbers were 175 and
36, respectively.

In 2000, Katahdin opened to hikers on 17 May and SoBo hiker #80 climbed
on 14 June, 4 weeks later.  I'd guess that Y2K Sobo #200 peaked another
four weeks later on July 12.

Best guess is that between five and ten SoBos will start on 15 June 2001
although you can expect to see between two and three dozen people on top
of Katahdin.

Be warned that the 100 mile wilderness won't be like the 100 mile
wilderness that your remember from 1998 -- in 2000 this would have put
you smack in the middle of the peak black fly infestations -- in 1998
you came through after the black flies.
