On my recent section, I used the same gutter nails I carry to stake out my
tarp. Worked fine but confined you to cooking on the ground. I also used
rocks and that worked OK too, but on a table it tends to channel the flame
between the rocks and can scorch the table a bit.
Sweeper, a northbound thru, used some of that fine grid fencing (1/2 - 3/4 "
squares) wrapped into a cylinder to hold up the pot. It worked great with
aluminum foil wrapped tightly around the pot and stove for a windscreen. To
avoid the fatigue caused by folding and unfolding, both the fencing and the
windscreen were simply wrapped around the cooking pot when not in use.
Seemed like a simple, efficient system and didn't hurt the table underneath
a bit. I'm going to try it on my next hike.
