Mine are made by Leki, I guess originally to protect people and things when
not in use. They are made to fit over the carbide tips tightly with a solid
"click". Looks like there is a metal collar down in there to provide the
catch and keep the tip from punching thru.
Skippie...who probably looks odd staring into this rubber tip

I have questions for the pole tip users: Doesn't the carbide tip
punch through the rubber tip rather quickly? I really like the way
the carbide "sticks" to the rocks, but hate the scratches. Do the
tips have similar non-skid properties on rock?
Cosmo, who doesn't see significant additional pole-caused erosion up
here in MA (probably because we see many fewer thru-hikers than you
southern folks).
