[at-l] flight 60

be careful a lot of external frame packs have a much lighter weight to space
ratiothen most peopel think casue you store alot outside of the pack so teh
volume you need to look for is MUCH smaller(although they are harder and
harder to find)... and you might even consider going for a smaller external
frame pack. if you liek external that is.(there is not reason why internals
are better for AT hiking IMHO).. i am seriously considering buyign a kelty
trekker had my eyes of the thing the whoel time i hiked..for summer weekend
use. and my unoffical hiking partner did it with a kelty tioga from the
60s... i have a beomoth mountainsmith frostfire 2 that kept breaking and i
kept tapign and sewing. i am looking into new packs but i want sometime
smaller and bomb proof.... i foudn out i am to rough on my gear for that
nancy light weight stuff hehehhee.

i was considering goign down to a 40 liter pack... i use a 1 pound bivy (OR
Basic Bivy i think) stored arounda a zero degree synthetic sleeping bag and
a trianga stove or a whisperlight if the traianga might act up in the
tempurature(i also use soda can stove i made but i dont liek them as much as
my tranga dont assk why it is VERY VERY COMPLEX and have nothign to do with
weight or relabitlity has to do with spilled denatured). none of which take
up much space. that is about all you really need.. plus a bit more..
hehehe what i mean by that is tha those are the huge space eaters and heavy
static items. sleeping/shelter/cooking.... the rest is jsut fluff or varies
with trip.

the problem is i want to be able to take all sort of dumb stuff for
weekends liek a tent and lantern and stuff in the pack i need to devote some
time to search for stuff.... in stores packgin up my gear in actualy
packs... BUT I AM SO BUSY IN SCHOOL (takgin a break from programming sigh)

my BIGGEST suggestiogn to a AT hiker is to get a 2 liter pot. a 1 liter pot
does not fit enoguh food!! i am eyeing a open country 2 liter cook kettle
it is old style thin aluminum weighs almost noting has a bail handle and
lid....i love bail handles. if someone else lites a fire you can cook on the
fire with a bail handle alot easier... why use the stove at all if the fir
eis right there. MSR also makes a nice more modern style 2 liter titan pot.

right now however... i will keep using all my trashy stuff... my lekis of
mixedupness (i have 3 or 4 diffretn leki poles combined into a set of two)
my stiched up pack and my all to warm sleepgin bag that i still have never
zipped up all the way. and my wonderful non breathable rain clothes for
early spring late fall maybe even summer if i feel like tryign to stay dry
in the summer sweaty heat <yah right>.

the second you get out on the trail you meet peopel doign the trailwith such
trashy cheap and beat up gear you could not even imagine it holding to
gether jsut one more mile... jsut use wha tyou find comfortable and go hike
and worry about gear later.

wisperlight (who is goign CAR camping with his POP! for the first time in 3
years yeah!)
