 Oh, you could have started the most wonderful rumor mill going here, if
you'd just said something about "the reports of low power radio transmitters
set up along the AT".  But no you had to explain what was really going
on...what a kill joy...

Finally got around to reading February QST (a publication of the
American 
Amateur Radio League - ARRL for those not hams).  Page 107 has an
article
about QRP (low power) operation along the AT and says that a reflector
for
logging contacts is at atrail@lehigh.edu for awards.

Translation for everyone else:
Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) are taking low power (light weight) 
tranceivers on the AT and, using temporary antennas strung from trees,
are 
making contact with other hams and keeping track of the locations of the

contacts.  Before anyone gets any ideas, I seriously doubt that these
are 
the Avery Monitors.
