[at-l] Thru-hike Graphs

Interesting points about the charting of thru-hiker
data -- there are many thru-hiker journals on-line
that could provide rather accurate data if someone
wanted to take the time to compile it all...

One of the interesting points that would probably be
shown is the actual steepness of the Appalachian Trail
doesn't lessen at the Virginia line for northbounders.
There was great disappointment in the thru-hiker crowd
I hiked with during Year 2000 when the mountains
didn't magically go away at the Virginia Line and the
pace pick up to 20 miler days (Ha, talk about wishful
thinking...). Chart data would likely show the Trail
to be quite steep all the way to Waynesboro in central
Virginia (as shown by average miles per day by a
typical northbound thru-hiker).

I also think the chart data would show the rocks of
Pennsylvania don't slow down a northbound thru-hiker
as much as what might be imagined. The rocks are just
annoying when a thru-hiker is trying to get into the
groove of the day -- requiring too much attention. Of
course, the occasional face-plant into granite does
wonders for attention grabbing.

Lots of truths might be dispelled if we had actual
facts. Ha. I'm sounding like Yogi Berra now...
