I think you need to do a little of both.  For instance, Mac and Cheese is the 
same everywhere and that is something you can buy in bulk.  I found that 
after awhile, I wasn't hungry for what I bought prior to hiking.  I really 
think it is important to be eating what your craving for, and I just didn't 
know that until I went into the grocery store during my hike.  A lot of 
times, after the first couple of weeks, I would empty my food drop box out, 
pick out what I wanted, and mail the rest ahead.  I then went to a grocery 
and got different stuff.
