Hi All
I'm back home and reading this list again. I spent a month in Florida where I
checked out both ends of the Florida Trail. Fort Pickens near Pensacola and
Loop Road in Big Cypress National Preserve.
I also spent a couple weeks playing around on the southern end of the AT. I
slack packed between several roads and went to several favorite spots. I also
met several of this years Thru Hikers and visited several hikers places.
We spent the night at Amicalola Falls Campground and I hiked the Approach
Trail.
We spent a night at Goose Creek and went to town with the shuttle for supper
with some hikers. Keith is busy now as the swarm of NBers has started. He
sounded quite please with the ruck at his place last January.
I visited with Dorothy at Walasi-Yi Center. I saw but didn't meet the new
owner. Dorothy said everything about the sale was set and "papers" would be
signed as soon as the lawyers could set up a convenient time for all. Hikers
should see little or no change in the operation.
The day I visited the Blueberry Patch was very busy. They had been full the
night before and had turned hikers away. Gary was preparing supplies for his
upcoming missionary trip. (Sorry I didn't ask any details) We had spent the
night before at the Hiawasse Inn where there were several other hikers,
including Ram Bunny.
I stopped by Rainbow Springs and visited with Jensine. (Buddy was fixing a
broken pipe somewhere) She was in good spirits, saying the hikers were just
beginning to get there. She told me about Pirate when their truck loaded with
firewood burned. She said they had had a few people interested in buying the
place but that they really didn't need to sell right now. However, she did
say it would be nice to have younger people take it over so they could relax
more.
I heard about a new hostel near Tellico Gap after I hiked from there to NOC.
Apparently it is going to be open only until the operator heads out To do the
PTC. We had a Hamburger at NOC and then went to Fontana Dam. The next day we
drove to Mt Momma's, climbed Max Patch and ended the day in Hot Springs. I
missed visiting hours. <VBG>
The next morning I visited Bluff Mountain outfitters before going north to
Erwin for a short stop at Uncle Johnny's. Later we went down to Laurel Fork
Falls and on to Kinkora. Bob Peoples is working with the local club on a
major relo near Carvers Gap. They have moved a major amount of Gravel up the
mountain for the Konnarck Crew to use this summer. Bob said that a few hikers
had been through but he wasn't expecting a rush for a few more weeks. He said
he had heard that Wing Foot was going to make some major changes with
Trailplace and The Handbook. Even that WF might get back on the Trail.
My final trail related event was a stop to look at the new Partnership
Shelter. Nice! At the park building I met a young Thru Hiker who was
surprised when I told him at the rate he was going he might find
"significant" snow in VT, NH and ME.
Anyway after hiking 100 trail miles, several mountains and visiting hiker
spots, I am now home where there is two feet of snow on the lawn. Who knows
why? I don't
