[at-l] "Regroup on the food" and "Stuff"

Only FUR can make the decision about whether to come home or not but just
let him know we're all rooting for him to complete this trip if he possibly
can without jeopardizing his own long-term health - if it's just short-term
stuff, IMHO, he should stay on the trial and go for it!

OK, now that I bragged about our wonderful food system, I need to share
what Fur wrote about the true test......using the system "out there". It
seems in our home trials, we didn't allow for the ouside temp. factor,
which I now know makes a huge difference. Also note what he says about
the inline filter that he was "previously" very happy with. This info.
may assist you in making your own decisions.

The food isn't doing so good. Most of the meals are too big, even
without adding anything to them, which I haven't been.(*note. I know
this will change in a few weeks) The scallop potatoes didn't work at
all, never really got soft, and they smelled funny. The rice took
forever to soften up enough to eat, and as u can imagine, I was hungry
NOW! The mashed potatoes worked the best, but stop putting meats and
vegies in everything, it's not getting done, as in hard to chew. YUCK!
The ramen noodles did fine, and u can start sending bunches of then in
different flavors. The stuffing I just got should work out ok, and the
mashed pots. I'll let you know about the rest. You might need to go
ahead and send something different to the Hiawassee drop,, not sure what
was in that maildrop for food. Like I said tho, the meats and veggies
aren't getting done, and I'm having to wait to long too eat. I haven't
tried putting the peas and stuff in the jar yet to soften up, just
doesn't seem to be time while hiking, this could change tho later on.
It's really been too cold and windy to even stop and take any breaks
without freezing! The snacks are going fine, I seem to be eating alot of
that kind of stuff, guess because it's easy. The rice crispy treats are
yummy, send more! The candy bars too! The little packs of cookies are
great! I haven't even touched the peanut butter and crackers yet, like I
said, too cold to stop and eat lunch, so I still have all that. The
small packs of Chex party mix, send more!!! My fav! Haven't even touched
breakfast, other then fixing hot choc.,and the poptarts, so keep them
comming. I hate to heat water in the morning tho, the cold, hard enough
to just get up and packed. Well, think thats all fur the food, can't
think anymore right now about that, lost my train of thought! Ok, then,
the tent. Keeps getting so much condensation inside, then my bag gets
wet from rubbing up against it, real bummer! Also, the way its made you
have to keep the vestiuble completly open to fight the condensation,
then all the cold wind blows right in, brrrrrrr! The packs working great
tho! The pad? Might switch to a z-rest, or ridge-rest, my feet are
freezing without anything under them. My in-line filter froze up today,
the tubing and all, so I had to use the bleach. Lost the water bottle
the second day, but Karen gave in a soda bottle thats working fine. I
find it easier to just filter into it and drink that, its hard to get
enough by sucking on the tube. Well.....
I've only gotten 1 blister on my right foot toe, the same one I always
do, not bad. Ok, now the trip over all.... Really wish Iwould have
started a little later. Yeah, I know, I hear ya, you tried to tell me!
The weather has been nasty!! I've really been fighting with myself
about stopping and coming home for a few weeks until it warms up. I
think thats why my knee went out, along with the other aches. I can't
take the cold anymore u know, and it's been bad! Real bad! The first few
days were rain and fog, the last few cold and windy! This has been a
real fight for me the last few days. I don't want to quit, I love the
hiking part, but the sleeping and trying to fix food in the cold and
rain has been nasty! Just can't decide what to do. I need your advice.

Ok, so thats what he wrote........ perhaps it may help in your decision
making process.
