As I'm wading thru these one by one, I'm sure someone has already commented on this, but still - this is where Tom and I started our hike over New Years - Bryson City, on The Road to Nowhere, as they call it. There are numerous places you can find info on the road, (lots of hits on "Road to Nowhere Bryson City") why it happened (but only five miles) and how the local people feel about it. The whole area has some interesting history, and we came upon a family graveyard along Lakeshore Trail. We found out later that they boat the relatives in per some agreement. (We assumed something of the sort - hard to imagine the family hiking in that far to go visit.) The money that's been approved, as far as I can determine, isn't WANTED by the nps - they have no desire to finish the road that was started several decades ago. It is also many tens of millions of dollars short of what it would actually cost, from what I've read. Interesting situation. Let's hope common sense prevails !
- for once.
