He released a book 1997... "River", about his Source to Sea backpacking/raft
journey on the Colorado River. Since I haven't read that he DID die (he's
only in his early seventies) I'll bet he's still around. He used to live in
the SF bay area. 
River was published by Random House. If you were really serious I am sure
they could point you to his agent or publicist.
