Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80. (about $150 US)

On another list I participate in, among professional video people, the
Olympic Stylus series was recommended overwhelmingly as an excellent point
and shoot 35mm camera. Many on this list are former professional
photographers and such.
Now they aren't indestructible, nothing is; but it is very easy to use,
strong "weatherproof" and one of the few reasonably priced point and shoot
cameras that still use a real glass lens.
My daughter used the slightly bigger Olympus Stylus Zoom 70 on her 1997
Thru-Hike. She and her dog made it 1700 miles and the camera is still
working today. I just bought the never version of the same camera for
myself. It fits easily in my Outdoor Research Possum pocket that rides on
the shoulder strap of my pack. They are very compact.
The "Epic" version is about 20-30 percent smaller. It is claimed to be the
smallest 35mm camera on the market (I doubt this, but Olympus claims it)

BTW-If you want to take slides make absolutely sure the camera you choose
will accept slide film. Many of the cheapest 35mm P&S cameras won't expose
slide film correctly. If you read the fine print they are optimism for 400
speed print film and don't actually change exposure!
Sorry that was probably too mush information.
