Miss Janet, your have a classic Ward Leonard story there, the likes of
which I haven't heard in quite some time... Lots of questions here:
>>I had heard that he was banned from the trail for a certain period of
>>time. Is that time period up? <<
Yes, the time period was up roughly 2 and a half
years ago. The "banning" itself lasted, I believe, two years (somewhere
around late '96 to late '98).
>>Who banned him, and who is supposed to enforce this ban?
As far as I remember (and I could be inaccurate on this), he was ordered to
not set foot on the AT for a period of two years by a federal judge (since
the AT is technically a national park, it was handled at the federal level).
Enforcement was, as far as I know, then left primarily to Bob Gray, who is
the Park Service's law enforcement guy for the whole AT, working out of the
ATPO in Harpers Ferry. He was supposedly in touch with Ward and his family
during and after the 2 year ban, and it all apparently went smoothly.
(anyone is free to correct me on any of this mostly-second-hand info).
>>What does one DO to get banned from such a large place?!?!?! <<
I have very little detail here, but it involved an incident in Boiling
Springs sometime in '96 with some ATC staff - who happen to be people who
can more easily take such matters to the federal level more quickly.
There's lots more history of Ward (including my own experiences with him),
but I'm sure there's plenty on this list who have their own
stories/descriptions, so I'll end this here.
Remember - anyone closer to the case feel free to correct me.
