Whenever I ask for something I can't find and I sense that the
salesperson is the least bit unsure, I politely ask if it's their dept.
or area of expertise and if not, can they find someone who might be more
knowledgeable. They are usually glad to hand me off at that point and I
usually get to talk to someone who knows something.

BTW there were two hiking pole displays.  The rubber tips were at the
one in the front of the store.
