[at-l] Time to (Virtual) Ruck!!!!

"Hawaii"....

Hawaii was the scene of one of my greatest surprises ever, while
hiking...

I was on the Island of Kauai in 1971, and on the Napali Coast there is a
trail that winds through 3 valleys, the farthest in from the road being
Kalalau Valley; I was walking along, contemplating another meal of rice
and guava, lost in my solitude, when out of thin air comes a female
voice, in greeting: "Hi!" she says...scared me silly, cause no one was
there, then "Up here" says she....Looking up, I espied a very naked
young lady in a very well camoflauged tree house. Just beautiful, both
of them. And the tree-house was quite remarkably well-thought out. Once
I got to know her, she introduced me to some other tree-dwellers who
lived even farther up the Valley. She had been out there so long that
she hadn't a bit of clothing left to wear, and after I had been in the
Valley a few weeks, she decided that she'd best go to town and call her
folks, but noone had attire appropriate for her, so one of the other
fellows who had to make a rice run to town brought back some material
and she -made a dress- Off she went to town, and never returned while I
was there; always wondered what happened to her. Those were strange
times in Hawaii....There used to be a crazy M.D. from Alabama who lived
in the jungle up on Kauai and would play baseball all by himself on the
beach....run the bases and everything. Then there was the guy who lived
there year-round, eating very little but still having the strength to
swim a mile or more out into the calm summer ocean and just float for
hours...he said he became the sky and the sea....

Strange days and haunted nights,
In the tree by the Sea,

A.
