There are vegan hiking boots out there.  Garmont makes
a pair, and I believe there are others as well.  

So no, we aren't against hiking boots ;)  And if 1 or
2 pairs of leather hiking boots are the only animal
products you own, you are doing REAL good.  FYI, Dr.
Martins also have vegan boots, though I doubt they can
be used for hiking.
