Apologizing in advance for going to the list with this but it could be
useful to others:
 
Al,
For what it's worth, the builder should be required to have a registered
surveyor lay out the footings and/or have a survey of the footings done
after they are poured and then provide an as-built drawing showing that
the footings match the plans - all before any framing begins.  In some
instances the lender requires this.  This insures that the building is
where you planned it and that you comply with any zoning requirements
like setbacks, etc.  I would recommend that you have this done whether
you stick around to supervise or not.
