I'm sure Ryan knows the EXACT date, but I believe it was in the fall of 1995 
when Ryan put an invite out to folks cruising newsgroups for AT information. 

I and many others followed Gutsy's thru-hike, thanks to Strider (Pete 
Fornof's) posts of her journal on this list during the 1996 northbound 
thru-hiking season....the first almost-realtime ongoing hiker journal on the 
Internet, far as I know...
