I would recommend "Ecological Imperialism" (can't
remember the author, maybe Cosby or Crosby) which
delves into social and ecological history
post-Columbus
as affected by disease and other biologics introduced
into the Americas. Smallpox did a much better job
on Native Americans than guns or steel.
