Not to pick a fight but there are a couple of misrepresentations here.
1) HTML doesn't necessarily mean a 4x in size of either the message or the
transmission from the listserver.
Case in point. On my servers I've subscribed to both Lightweight backpacker
(HTML format) and AT-L (plain text). Here are a few stats.
Lightweight Backpacker (10 months of messages)
# of Messages Storage Space
12,736 8,897 K or about 9 megs
AT-L (2.5 years worth of messages)
# of Messages Storage Space
37,905 32,832 K or a little less than 33 megs
As you can see the amount of data stored per message is larger, but not
significantly.
2) RTF does stand for Rich Text Format, or at least it does in several
thousand pages of documentation on my computer.
3) Depending upon the mail server software used, each email address doesn't
necessarily mean a unique email message is sent. In cases were lots of
people reside on a single domain (ie aol.com, msn.com) etc., many list
servers allow the ability to send a single email to multiple recipients.
This can significantly reduce the amount of bandwidth required. I don't know
if Ryan's server is setup this way, but many are.
4) Depending upon the <HTML> encoding, in many cases image data is not send
imbedded within the message. It is sent as a link to an image on another
server. It is only transferred when the email message is opened.
