Clinton to Unveil Road Ban in National
Forests

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Clinton (news - web sites) was expected on
Friday to declare nearly 60 million acres of U.S. forest land off limits to
road construction and timber harvests to keep pristine areas for hiking,
fishing and other recreation.

Sen. Frank Murkowski, an Alaskan Republican, said Thursday the final U.S.
Forest Service rule would be challenged in court by western governors and
companies who contend the action would prohibit access to vast amounts of
natural gas at a time when the nation needs more energy.
