Carry a hiking pole. A good placement in the spokes will disable the bike 
for some time. Of course, It could disable the pole, also. Yet, it would 
give you a good opportunity to try out your first aid skills.

I recall a couple of years ago some bikers chumming the list by announcing 
a plan to bike the entire AT, ignoring the many places where a bike is 
among the last things you would want. They got rowdy, and Ryan booted them 
(I believe the only time he has done such a thing).

In GA, there are so many good FS roads along the AT, there is little 
interest in riding a bike on the trail. I'd think a few blow downs and rock 
scrambles would cause serious behavioral interventions for most naughty bikers.
