I would suggest a broader flat strap, rather than a leather boot lace.

The neat thing about a strap is that it can come down the palm of hand and
around you wrist so as to take the weight as you press down, allowing a much
looser grip on the stick and avoiding the death grip.  A thin cord or lace
does not work as well -- BTDT.
