[at-l] hiking poles.

I have an old hiking pole made for me by a beaver.  I also have a leki. 
I really like the way the leki stays put due to the wrist strap.  the
wooden pole is my favorite due to it's history and other reasons.  I'd
like to add a strap to the wooden one, but, don't want to ruin it.  any
comments on drilling holes in a 1" diameter piece of wood? anyone ever
done that with success?
