I'd say shoes are a definite possibility. I've used them myself up
there. I've seen feet of snow on the trail.
crampons ... ??? I'm not sure. maybe insteps would be a safety net.
especially on the approach trails. but, also, there are sections of
the at that are nothing but rock, and, would present a real challenge
in ice.
I'm watching the weather closely. there is a BIG storm coming into
the east for next week. there always is a chance that storm will be
followed by another. plus you can go to
http://www.knoxnews.com/weather/smokies.shtml and see yesterday's
conditions. it seems that the snow from last week is just about gone.
